I have a 1976 Wagoneer that I bought and stuck behind the barn about 30 years ago. I decided I had better get going on it while I still can. Among many problems - the tailgate window no workie. I looked on BJ's site but it didn't show up at first - I saw a reference on the forums and managed to find this replacement. It's good - sturdy and should last a long time. Mine had the 3 wire input from the front switch and it took a little fooling around to get it wired. I didn't realize I don't have an original motor, have the later version and the switch didn't work right away due to the polarity reversal requirement, totally my fault, not the switch. I did eventually get it working after I added the relay kit and modified it with different relays. But the switch is great!

Overall this kit allowed me to do a successful install, however in my 1973 Wagoneer I ran into a couple of problems that the newer Wags probably don't have. First, this switch works. It's a durable switch that you can buy off the shelf from other retailers. It's a top quality item. The included aluminum mounting block is great and would be hard to make yourself without a mill or some machining tools. I had to mount the switch upside down to get the screw holes to line up with my factory mounting bracket. No huge deal. The biggest problem I ran into was that my 1973 only had a 3 connector switch. I'm not sure HOW that was supposed to work. The BJ's directions don't cover the wiring procedure for an old 3 connector switch. Even the TSM for my 1973 shows a 3 position switch. I don't know how that ever worked electrically. Regardless, I was able to re-wire my tailgate wiring to use the BJ's 6 connector switch which gave me a wiring design that's the same as the newer Wagoneers. I would buy this again.

  • Works well, even in a 1973

This is a good quality item. My 1973 Wagoneer has a 3 wire original switch which is unusual. The included directions do not include a wiring procedure for this scenario, but I was able to make it work. The wiring for the 3 connector switch can easily be connected to the 6 terminal switch by a simple change that gives you 5 wires. Physically, the switch and mounting block was a slightly tight but I believe it is solid and should last a long, long time. The mounting adapter is better than what I could have cooked up. In short, this is an expensive kit but has the parts you need and is worth the price when you do a successful job.

Works great. Easy to install. Great instructions. Much better and heavier duty than OEM. I would highly recommend upgrading to this product to anyone who is working on their tailgate.

for my 1977 Wagoneer, the orange wire in the installation instructions is actually red with white trace. Also, the brown and tan wires need to be reversed from what is it in the instructions to make sure dash switch works correctly, which it did after I installed this kit. Also, you will need to really crimp the connectors very hard, and in order to get the two red with white trace power wires and the black jumper wire in the same connector, you will need to cut off about 20% of the stands so that they all fit in the crimp connector. since you are taking all of the parts off, it is a good time to lube the gears and tracks. I found it a good idea to use a 2" hole saw over make a hole near the bottom of the inner tailgate to allow easy access to the spring clips that retain the steel part of the glass frame to each of the regulator arms. Also, I was not able to install the replacement spring clips, as the spring steel is too stiff, but you can get replacements that are as thin as the originals at any Ace or True Value.
